The location is part of the choice
A heat pump needs a suitable location under the exact manufacturer's installation instructions. An installer should assess space, airflow, access, condensate drainage and nearby bedrooms or neighbours. A tight enclosure that suited an old storage tank may not suit the proposed heat pump.
Ask how sound is assessed for the particular unit and position, including normal operating times. A quoted sound figure on its own doesn't tell you what you'll hear through a bedroom window. Avoid comparing models using a noise number unless the measurement basis is the same.
Match the heating schedule to your home
Discuss shower times, storage capacity, recovery and any backup heating function. A larger family using several showers in a short period needs a different assessment from a household with spread-out demand. The installer should explain how the model meets that pattern.
If you have rooftop solar, ask whether heating can be scheduled to suit daytime generation. Have your energy retailer confirm the tariff or controlled-load arrangement. Compare running-cost estimates using your likely usage, rather than assuming a percentage saving applies to every home.
Send a hot-water enquiryIf an existing heat pump has stopped working
Write down any visible error, when it occurs and whether the system still delivers some hot water. Include the brand, model and approximate installation date if you know them. Don't remove covers or attempt electrical or refrigerant work.
Confirm that the attending provider supports your equipment and can coordinate any required specialist work. A plumbing referral isn't a claim that every provider holds every electrical or refrigerant qualification. If warranty may apply, check the manufacturer's process before authorising independent repairs.
Get the incentive assumptions confirmed
SA REPS offers and federal small-scale technology certificates can be relevant to eligible installations. They aren't a universal fixed discount. Ask the participating provider to confirm eligibility and documentation before committing.
A useful quote states the exact model, full installed price, incentive amount and your final payable amount separately. It also identifies electrical changes, old-unit removal and any site work. The rebate guide links to the official scheme information.
Your questions, answered
Can a heat pump work with rooftop solar?
Ask about compatible heating schedules and controls. The practical benefit depends on available generation, household demand, your tariff and the actual unit.
Are heat pump repairs included in the referral service?
You can submit a repair enquiry. Describe the model and fault so the provider can confirm whether they support that equipment and what specialist work might be needed.
